School board certifies closed session; approves readmissions, suspensions, expulsions and personnel list
Summary
Following a closed session convened under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, the Accomack County School Board certified the session and approved multiple disciplinary and personnel actions, including readmissions, long-term suspensions, expulsions and a personnel list, and approved the GED list and a summer-retreat contract.
The Accomack County School Board convened a closed meeting on May 20 under provisions of the Code of Virginia and later certified that the closed meeting complied with the law.
At the open meeting that followed certification, the board voted on several items that were listed in the motion to convene closed session. The motion presented at the start of the closed meeting identified student matters (four readmissions, four long-term suspensions, three expulsions and one GED case) and nine personnel matters (including appointments, resignations, retirements, nonrenewals and status changes), and cited the relevant Code of Virginia subdivisions governing closed sessions.
After returning to open session, the board approved the readmission motion for case labeled Five-twenty-twentyFive-one. The board then approved long-term suspension recommendations "as amended" for the listed cases and approved expulsions for cases identified as 6, 7 and 8, following motions to carry out the recommendations. The board also approved the personnel list as presented earlier and later approved the GED list.
Members certified the closed meeting record with a formal statement that "only public business matters lawfully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed" and that only the matters identified in the motion were considered. The board also approved a contract for a summer retreat for the school board.
The motions on student discipline and personnel were presented as formal votes during the open session; the board did not discuss the facts of individual student cases in public.
