COLUMBUS — The Ohio Senate on June 10 unanimously passed Senate Bill 179, a bill requiring correctional institutions to identify incarcerated individuals who are veterans using the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veteran Reentry Search Service (VRSS) and to facilitate connections to veteran‑specific services before and after release.
Sponsor Senator Johnson said the VRSS integration will ensure accurate accounting of incarcerated veterans and enable institutions to verify eligibility, help inmates contact VA and county veteran service offices, and refer people to veterans justice outreach programs and local resources. The bill passed the Senate 33–0 after unanimous committee approval, supporters said, and proponents on the floor emphasized the aim of easing reintegration for veterans who become involved in the criminal justice system.
Senator Weinstein spoke in favor of the measure on the floor. The bill passed without recorded opposition and will move to the House for further consideration.
