The Massachusetts Permanent Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities approved new officers for the commission’s executive board and discussed plans to form an advisory board and a succession and mentoring plan.
Chair Denise Garlick reported nominations had been solicited, and the executive director received nominations for chair, vice chair, treasurer and secretary. Jassy Brooks Abbott moved to approve the slate: Denise Garlick as chair, Chris White as vice chair, Carl Richardson as treasurer, and Oz Mondejar as secretary.
The roll call recorded multiple ayes and the motion carried. Chair Garlick thanked outgoing and continuing staff and commissioners and outlined an ambition to build an advisory board to broaden the commission’s networks and an explicit successor plan to mentor future leaders.
"We are looking to develop an advisory board," Chair Denise Garlick said, describing the idea as a way to bring people with subject-matter expertise into the commission’s work who are not formal commissioners. Oz Mondejar volunteered to help lead advisory-board development and said he envisioned business and younger leaders participating.
Why it matters: An advisory board and formal succession planning are intended to expand participation, build leadership pipelines and sustain the commission’s permanent work throughout the Commonwealth.
Next steps: Executive board and staff will develop a proposal for the advisory board (scope, membership, launch plan) and a mentoring/succession policy; staff will circulate materials to commissioners for feedback.
