Marshfield Fire and Rescue introduces two new paramedic recruits; commission accepts one resignation and authorizes October recruit interviews

Marshfield Fire and Rescue introduced two career-track paramedic recruits during the Police and Fire Commission meeting and the commission accepted the resignation of one recruit.

Department staff introduced Charlotte Shiffrell, who started with Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department on June 2, 2025, as a career-track student recruit, and noted she passed the national registry paramedic exam and earned a Wisconsin Fire I certification in December 2024. "Please help me in welcoming Charlotte to the Marshall Firebirds. Congratulations," a department representative said.

Staff also introduced Joseph Downes (Downs), who began on June 2, 2025, completed an internship and passed the national registry paramedic exam; staff said he is enrolled in a Wisconsin Fire I certification course with completion expected July 17, 2025, and is working on the candidate physical ability test. Staff said both recruits will move to firefighter recruit career track 1 after they complete state certification and obtain a valid CPAT.

The commission accepted the resignation of firefighter recruit Megan Peterson, effective May 20, 2025, after an HR discussion; the acceptance was approved by roll call. The commission also approved a motion to conduct a new recruit interview process in October 2025 to identify candidates for two referendum-approved positions and to fill two firefighter positions effective Jan. 1, 2026, authorized by an April 1 referendum.

Commissioners asked for the process to proceed and staff said it was intended to get a jump on recruiting to ensure positions are filled as the referendum-authorized staffing becomes effective.
