Council approves audit and support contract for Denison's GIS program
Summary
The council approved a contract to audit Denison's GIS processes and recommend improvements and training; the effort is described as phase one of a two‑phase program to expand GIS services citywide.
The Denison City Council voted to approve a contract to audit the city's geographic information system (GIS) processes and prepare recommendations for expanded use and staff training.
Planning and GIS staff told the council the city has two GIS employees and the existing program has focused on traditional roles such as 9‑1‑1 addressing. "This project will give staff a cleaner baseline to continue meeting the traditional needs and finding a way to meet updated expectations for things like data collection and presentation," Miss Stearns said, describing the work as phase one of a two‑phase project; phase two will focus on staff training and data‑storage recommendations.
Councilman Massey moved to approve contract number 2024-10154 (as read into the record) with Kimberly Horn for GIS support and to authorize the interim city manager to execute related documents; Councilman Thorne seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff said the audit will assess current processes and identify special projects and tools such as interactive public dashboards and training to enable other city divisions to create GIS tools.
