Board member Hannigan told the Gadsden County School Board she intends to bring an agenda item at the next meeting proposing a resolution to establish a student board member representation program modeled on student-led initiatives she encountered that have Department of Education support.
Hannigan said the organization she described is student‑led, has worked across the state and that Leon County has an existing student board member program. She said the proposed resolution would be brought to the full board for consideration, and that the measure would include details on how the district would select and seat a student representative.
Hannigan also recounted a morning encounter in which a middle-school‑age student approached her outside a store asking for work or money to buy food. She said she obtained the student’s name and contacted school staff (Ms. Floyd) and noted the student’s family already had some district involvement through Mr. Russell’s office. Hannigan said the episode underscored unmet needs and the need for the district to coordinate with partners to reach vulnerable students.
Hannigan said she plans to convene partners and “sit at the table” to develop responses for students needing food, supervision or other services and asked fellow trustees to support brainstorming and partnership-building. The board did not vote on the resolution at this meeting; Hannigan said she will present a formal agenda item at the next meeting.
