The Denison City Council voted to declare the residence at 1927 West Johnson unsafe and to authorize its demolition after neighborhood services staff reported multiple health and structural hazards.
Neighborhood services staff said property owners were given notice in December 2024 to repair or demolish the structure, but did not comply. "The structure was consequently posted as unsafe on October 2024," Robert Lee told the council, adding that an administrative warrant executed in October found multiple substandard conditions and health and fire hazards. Staff recommended demolition and said the property constituted "an attractive nuisance in this neighborhood."
According to staff, the appraised value of the improvements is $89,933 and taxes owed total $26,260.40; water service was last active there in March 2024. Staff told council that uninvited occupants had left the property when power was shut off.
Council members asked whether the property might already be on a sheriff's auction list because taxes were unpaid; staff said the county has a judgment on the property and said they would coordinate with the county if the structure is demolished and the county proceeds with an auction of the lot.
Mayor Pro Tem Teresa Adams moved to declare the structure a nuisance and unsafe and to order demolition; Councilman Courtwright seconded the motion. The council approved the motion by voice vote.
Staff said records of notices and violations are on file with Neighborhood Services. The council's action authorizes staff to proceed with demolition consistent with the Denison Code of Ordinances.
