The Piper Unified School District Board of Education approved a revised classified salary schedule intended to raise the district’s lowest starting hourly pay to $15 and remain more competitive with neighboring districts and local industries.
A staff presenter told the board the package was the result of multi‑year work to improve pay and that the district estimates the change will cost approximately $295,000. Staff said the larger increase this year was fiscally feasible following prior smaller steps.
“A goal has kind of been to get to $15 an hour for our lowest paid starting position,” the presenter said while describing the proposed schedule and the timeline to align contract start dates in July.
Board members voted to approve the schedule; the motion passed 6‑0. Board members who recorded votes during roll call included Armstrong, Bakeridge, Beshore, Biondi, Fergus and Bader.
Staff said implementing the new schedule is timed to support contracts that begin July 1 for some maintenance and operations staff; other classifications with later contract start dates would follow. The presenter noted the estimate may be conservative and that payroll timing for different employee groups informed the requested board action that evening.
The board’s vote authorizes the salary schedule as presented; the motion did not include additional funding sources or offsets in the meeting discussion. The district did not provide line‑by‑line budget adjustments in the public presentation that night.
