Commissioner of Finance Carrie Gallagher and Deputy Director Andrea Concannon presented the request and described it as "step two of a three‑step process," returning to the committee after an earlier briefing. Gallagher said the proposal would keep the county's total sales tax at 8.125% while extending the additional 0.75 percentage point for the two‑year period beginning Dec. 1, 2025.
Committee members asked no substantive questions. The motion to request enactment of Senate Bill 7630 and Assembly Bill 7461, which would allow the local special law authorizing the rate extension, was called to question and carried by the committee.
The County executive's office and the legislative branch collaborated on the request, committee members said. Gallagher characterized the item as part of the county's fiscal planning; no vote totals were recorded in the transcript beyond committee approval.
The committee's approval sends the home‑rule/special‑law request forward to the full legislature for further action and to the state legislature for consideration of the companion bills.
