Legislature accepts $831,356 in additional CHIPS funds for road repairs

Putnam County accepted a state CHIPS allocation increase of $831,356 for 2025, which county officials said will supplement other road funding sources and expand county paving and repair work.
The Putnam County Audit and Administration Committee on May 22 approved a budgetary amendment to accept an additional $831,356 in Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funds for the county’s 2025 capital projects.
County officials said the state’s adopted New York budget increased local CHIPS allocations and that county DPW expects to combine CHIPS dollars with other transportation funding streams (such as PAVE-NY, EWR and POP) to exceed $2 million for road work in 2025. "So when we start the budget process, over the last few years, we put in a placeholder of 1,200,000 with the hopes that the state would give us more, and they did, this year as well," a finance presenter said.
Legislators approved budgetary amendment 25A048 by voice vote. Officials said the added funds will be directed to pave county roads, treat potholes and support winter-recovery operations and related capital repairs.
The committee asked DPW to provide a prioritized list of road projects to be funded with the consolidated dollars and to report back on planned uses so the legislature and the public can track project delivery.
