Parks superintendent outlines staffing needs, pond wildlife issues and solar-light installation

Parks staff reported to the Park Board on June 9 that Liberty Field Pond has heavy weed growth and many turtles, that geese remain a persistent presence, and that the department needs additional seasonal help to maintain parks at current standards.

Parks Superintendent Chris Fowler was not at the meeting but provided notes: the pond has a large turtle population and geese; turtles prey on fish, which complicates stocking efforts. Fowler suggested plantings of taller grasses in portions of the pond bank to discourage geese, though he noted tall grasses around half the pond would restrict recreational use. Board members also heard that grass carp have not been fully effective against weed growth.

Fowler also reported the solar light pole for the back of City Park has been installed and awaits bucket-truck access for final installation; results are expected by the July meeting.
