Commission approves Stage 1 improvements for 826 College Street in historic district

The Montgomery Policy Commission unanimously approved Stage 1 of proposed improvements at 826 College Street in the Historical Preservation District on June 11. The approved Stage 1 scope includes landscaping, a two-level cedar deck, ranch-style perimeter fencing, a three-foot interior picket fence, gutters (white), rain barrels, garden improvements, and measures to protect a historic well on the property.

The property owner, identified in the record as Tiffany, described plans to restore historic elements, retain original porch structures and use reclaimed brick for a chimney restoration in a later phase. Tiffany said the project is phased: "Stage 1 is going to be the landscaping deck garden. Stage 2 is gonna be... the back porch... I would like to get pitched, so that it matches the existing house, and that's where I would put back, the chimney using, like, reclaimed or aged brick." The commission discussed drainage and erosion-control measures intended to preserve the house foundation, including a dry-creek feature to direct flow.

Commissioners also requested information before work on tree removal, noting two dead trees and concerns about a larger diseased tree with significant branches near the house. The motion approving Stage 1 included the list of items read into the record and required follow-up information about tree removal before any cutting occurs. The vote was unanimous.

Staff will track permit submissions and the building-permit process for later-stage work.
