Officials, water authorities call Canyon Lake fish kills an emergency; testing and permits underway

City and regional water officials and the Canyon Lake Property Owners Association (POA) said this week they are treating recent fish deaths at Canyon Lake as an emergency and are collecting samples and exploring targeted responses — but that any treatment will require regulator approval.
The POA’s board treasurer, Jeff Bill, told the City Council that experts from the Lake Elsinore San Jacinto Watershed Authority (LESHWA) and GEI consultants presented data showing “the golden algae bloom was determined to be the main cause of the fish dying in the lake.”
