Union Board approves textbook purchases and posts summer capacity openings; district reports about 900 transfer students

The Union Public Schools Board approved two separate textbook and instructional materials authorizations for the 2025–26 school year and set summer capacity levels that will govern transfer openings posted July 1.
Doctor Nelson, a district staff member, asked the board to approve rolling over state textbook funds and to authorize up to $274,948.41 from general funds to purchase textbooks and software for 2025–26. Nelson also asked the board to authorize up to $900,000 in bond funds for additional textbook and software purchases for the same school year; those bond funds are part of a designated allocation and will allow staff to purchase materials without returning to the board for each purchase.
On transfers and capacity, Nelson presented quarterly capacity levels and explained the district will post summer transfer capacity on July 1. He said summer transfer activity can be unpredictable and that the district is leaving limited open spaces — including 20 spaces at the Freshman Academy — to accommodate summer movement. Nelson told the board the district currently has about 900 students attending Union on a transfer.
Both textbook items and the capacity posting were approved on the board’s motion and voice votes.
