Abbeville council authorizes intergovernmental agreement for public-safety cameras with sheriff and harbor commission

The Abbeville City Council authorized the mayor to execute an intergovernmental agreement with the Burbank Parish Sheriff and the Abbeville Harbor and Terminal Commission to deploy public-safety cameras.

Councilman Haugherty moved the authorization and Councilwoman Bruce Sauer seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote with no recorded opposition. Police Chief Mike Hardy described the cameras as ones the Harbor Terminal is installing that will benefit the city and said the sheriff will deploy cameras outside city limits and toward the Intracoastal near the Harbor Terminal building.

Chief Hardy said the cameras will be placed inside the city limits and that the sheriff will have coverage outside the city limits. Another speaker identified themselves as a member of the Harbor Terminal organization and said the commission voted to approve the agreement and that the incoming terminal president was coordinating the permit and insurance requirements.

Council members described the additional camera coverage as beneficial for public safety. The council gave its authorization to proceed with the intergovernmental agreement as presented.
