Berkeley County Schools leaders outline literacy vision and phased rollout of high‑impact instruction

BERKELEY COUNTY — District leaders and school board members used a retreat session to present a draft literacy vision and describe a phased plan to bring “high‑impact” instructional practices into classrooms across Berkeley County Schools.

Board members, the deputy superintendent for instructional leadership and outside partners said the initiative emphasizes grade‑level, standards‑aligned instruction, targeted professional development and clustering students by need so teachers can deliver more focused small‑group work.

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Woods summarized the district’s approach as “purpose, power, practice,” and asked, “How do we ensure that every child receives high quality, grade level instruction that allows their limitless potential?” He said the plan centers on five practices that will guide curriculum alignment, objective‑writing, vocabulary instruction and student independence through inquiry.
