Organizers and city representatives on Jan. 7 outlined plans for Abbeville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances, highlighting a community banquet and a downtown march and ceremony.
Terry, representing the Vermilion Reach group, said the MLK banquet is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2025, at Madeline Place (referred to in the meeting as Madeline Square Place / Madeline Place). The group plans a downtown march on Jan. 20, with a 9 a.m. stump service and a 9:30 a.m. lineup at Abbeville Electric for the march route down State Street to the square. Organizers said the march will include free food and beverages at the square and invited the public to attend.
Terry encouraged residents to attend and noted efforts by the Vermilion Reach group and city staff to ensure a meaningful commemoration. Council members and staff discussed logistics, including timing and where the march will assemble. Staff asked anyone who can provide historical information about the event’s origins to share it with organizers so the city can document the march’s history.
Organizers also expressed interest in public-facing promotions; staff said they will coordinate video and online promotion for the events. The council and staff asked for volunteers to assist with logistics and for any historical records about the first marches to be forwarded to city staff.
