A resident asked the board to consider signage for a rough stretch of Africa Road that is a Class 6 highway and not maintained by the town. Public Works Director Seth told the board his site visit showed the road is rough in the center and that the town's action in 1904 to "discontinue" maintenance effectively means the town no longer maintains that section. He recommended signage at the intersections with Prospect Mountain Road and Machado Hill Road.
Seth told the board: "If you would like, I can put Class 6 Road on either end, but I would put it out at the intersection with Prospect Mountain and Machado." He said he would add language indicating the road is "not maintained by town." Selectmen approved a motion directing the Public Works Director to install signs at both ends reading: "Class 6 Road — not maintained by town." A voice vote carried the motion.
Board members discussed GPS routing and said they found no evidence that popular navigation apps were directing drivers onto Africa Road. They asked staff to place signage at the main intersections to discourage inadvertent use and to reduce the chance of vehicles becoming stuck on the rough middle section.
The action applies to the unmaintained section described in older town records; the board did not close the road or change its highway classification.
