Palm Springs Unified board appoints Dr. Marcus Funchas as superintendent; employment agreement to be voted June 24

The Palm Springs Unified School District Governing Board unanimously appointed Doctor Marcus Funchas to serve as the district’s superintendent effective July 1, 2025.
The appointment was reported out of closed session by district staff member Claire Guerrero, who said the board took the action “by unanimous vote of all 5 board members.” Member Karen Cornett made the motion and Member Charlie Irvin seconded it, Guerrero told the board.
The board did not finalize an employment contract during closed session. Guerrero said, “this board took no action during closed session on the superintendent employment agreement. As required by law, the employment agreement will be voted on at the board's June 24 meeting, regular meeting and open session.”
Speaking to the board and audience after the appointment was announced, Doctor Marcus Funchas thanked the board and district community. “I am incredibly proud and honored to stand before you tonight as the next superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District,” he said, and pledged to “strengthen trust and transparency,” “champion academic excellence and close opportunity gaps,” and to “ensure that every scholar and staff member feels safe, supported, and valued.”
Board members on the dais offered congratulatory remarks during the open meeting. Board President Espiritueta and other trustees welcomed Funchas and thanked outgoing superintendent Tony Signore for his service; Funchas also expressed appreciation for Signore’s leadership in his remarks.
The board will consider the formal superintendent employment agreement in open session at its June 24 regular meeting; no contract language or compensation terms were reported out of the June 10 closed session.
The district will post the June 24 agenda and any employment agreement for public review in advance of that meeting, consistent with state open-meeting requirements.
