Stephenson County State's Attorney reports two attorney vacancies; office conducting active recruiting

Carl Larson, the Stephenson County state’s attorney, told commissioners the office currently has two attorney vacancies and is actively trying to recruit replacements.
Larson said the office has been intermittently short-staffed since the retirement of a long-serving attorney and that recruitment has proven challenging in recent years. “We're still trying to hire attorneys. ... Lately it's just been me cold calling people on Indeed,” Larson said at the meeting, describing outreach to prospective candidates and the declining pool of law-school graduates.
Board members asked how many attorneys were missing; the state’s attorney replied two. Larson also said an attorney in his office is expected to begin maternity leave soon, which will further strain staffing and increase workloads for remaining attorneys.
No formal action or expenditure was recorded related to hiring in the meeting; Larson said the office will continue to recruit and asked the board to refer qualified candidates as they become aware of prospects.
