District outlines charter renewal timeline for SAO; staff to publish analysis before June 25 vote

Deputy counsel/board staff (presenter: Mr. Moore) briefed the board June 11 on the statutory sequence the district must follow after receiving a charter renewal petition filed by the School of Extended Educational Options (SAO).
Moore summarized the process under the California Education Code: after receipt of a petition staff must analyze the charter’s legal compliance, fiscal soundness and student outcomes; the board must conduct a public hearing within 60 days of receipt and staff must publish its findings within 15 days of that hearing. Moore said SAO submitted its renewal petition on May 7 and the required public hearing took place June 11.
Moore told the board staff will publish its review and findings within 15 days of the June 11 hearing and that the board must either grant or deny the renewal within 90 days of receipt of the petition. He said the board’s next regularly scheduled meeting, June 25, will include final consideration and a vote on SAO’s renewal petition.
The district asked for public comments at the hearing; none were submitted specifically on the charter renewal during the June 11 item.
