Council approves demolition recommendations for multiple abandoned properties

Code Enforcement Director Lance Ned reviewed the list and said the properties were abandoned structures; he provided photographs to the council and asked whether anyone was present to represent the properties. A neighbor and a citizen asked questions about adjudication and how demolition costs are billed.
Ned said contracted demolition costs "probably" run about "$4 a square foot" in typical cases and suggested the city sometimes uses a sliding scale on charges depending on circumstances; he said the city sends bills to owners and those charges may become tax liens if unpaid. Ned and councilmembers also noted that parish adjudication can complicate recovering city demolition costs.
Council approved condemnation and demolition for the list of properties by voice vote. Councilmembers and staff discussed additional abandoned properties and asked code enforcement to prepare memos and advertising for future public hearings on demolition for additional addresses.
