Students from Somerville High School told the Somerville Board of Education on June 10 that multiple ensembles won championships and awards this year and thanked the board for funding and community support.
Students and recent performers at Somerville High School told the Somerville Board of Education on June 10 that the district’s music and performing arts programs posted a string of competition wins this season and asked the board to continue support as facilities work proceeds.
"We are here to talk about the music department at Somerville High School," student Jacob Scope told the board during the public-comment period. Several other students described specific results: "During our season, we had 2 championships, 1 for US band and 1 for TIA," Jacqueline said, and jazz-band member Noah Harris said his ensemble and soloists won multiple "best soloist" and section awards. Winter Guard member Kaylee Fabrizi said her team competed in a class with 36 teams, placed second in one circuit and recorded a final score of 84.97.
The students listed trophies, sectional awards and promotions in TIA and USBands as evidence of a successful season and thanked the board and the community for financial and logistical support. "The musical season was absolutely amazing, and we could not have done it without any of the support or funding from the board of education," Jacob Scope said.
Board leaders thanked the students during the meeting. The presiding officer said the comments reinforced "the importance of the arts," noted the year-end referendum and referenced planned auditorium updates in the district’s capital agenda. The board also publicly acknowledged the students’ regional and national competition results and congratulated them on the season.
Why it matters: The students’ remarks provide a public record of competitive successes and of a request for continued board support as the district moves into facility work and post-referendum planning. They also document student-facing outcomes that board members cited when discussing summer planning and the upcoming auditorium renovation timeline.
The board closed public comment after the remarks and proceeded with the scheduled agenda, including personnel and committee reports.
