The Covington Arts Commission reported May highlights to City Council on May 27, including completed box wraps around the city, a successful Maker's Market, and plans for Covington Days and a student art show. The commission also said the Youth Council passed its arts crawl to the Arts Commission for future coordination.
"We had great attendance, great attitude. It was a lovely event," Paloma, vice chair of the Arts Commission, said of the Maker's Market. She told council that artist Naomi Dubin will again produce chalk art for Covington Days and that the commission is monitoring weather and installation timing.
Paloma said the Arts Commission is evaluating leadership vacancies as several commissioners will not renew terms and that the commission hopes to expand the student art show into a larger, potentially judged, event in collaboration with nearby cities.
Council then considered an appointment to the Arts Commission. Council member Joe moved to appoint Megan McBride to fill position No. 1 on the Arts Commission with a term expiring May 31, 2028. Council members who interviewed McBride praised her teaching experience, fundraising capabilities and community-oriented approach. "She has a passion for art... she talked about how art is also therapeutic," Beth said after the interview.
The motion to appoint Megan McBride carried unanimously.
