The Jersey City Municipal Council unanimously approved an ordinance dedicating a plaque on a bench on Grove Street to honor the late Arif Patel, owner of Grove News Corner, a longtime neighborhood business near the PATH station.
Farhan Patel, speaking for his family at the public hearing, described his father’s life and Corner store legacy: “My father was a proud member of this community for almost 30 years,” he told the council, recounting that Arif opened the store at 24 and remained a neighborhood presence through illness and recovery.
The council closed the public hearing by voice vote and adopted City Ordinance 25‑064 by unanimous vote, 9‑0. Council members praised the Patel family’s contributions to the neighborhood; Council President Waterman, speaking during the adoption, offered congratulations to the family.
The ordinance dedicates a plaque and bench in the Grove Street area in recognition of Arif Patel’s long service to the neighborhood. City staff will coordinate placement and fabrication details with the family and the parks department.
