The Jersey City Municipal Council approved a resolution declaring Thursday, June 26, 2025, Gun Violence Awareness Day in the city and used the occasion to highlight local prevention work and community partnerships.
“This is a resolution sponsored by my office just to, highlight the importance of safety in trying to deter gun violence,” Councilperson Gilmore said when presenting the resolution. Gilmore thanked local organizations and community groups that work on violence prevention and noted an effort last year to reach “no homicides in the summer,” saying the work continues.
The council deferred the resolution earlier in the meeting to accommodate community speakers who had come to participate; when taken up, the measure passed unanimously with a recorded vote of 9‑0. Several community leaders and survivors spoke in support of the resolution during the meeting, praising local prevention organizations and urging the city to match symbolic recognition with funding and supportive services.
Speakers at the event urged the council to treat gun violence as a public‑health issue, invest in mental‑health and community programs, and sustain outreach in neighborhoods where violence is concentrated. Members of the public and community nonprofits also called for a panel discussion and follow‑up measures to ensure the city’s investments reach impacted families and youth.
The council’s action was symbolic recognition paired with public requests for staff to consider funding and programmatic support; no specific new appropriations were adopted at the meeting.
