Commission approves windows and shutters for Green Orthodontists; prefers continuous awning on Trudeau side

The Natchitoches Historic District Commission approved window and shutter installations and awnings for a downtown building proposed for Green Orthodontists and indicated a preference for a continuous canopy along the Trudeau Street side.

Yana, representing David and Carrie Green, presented two design options: Option 1 would add windows and shutters with a continuous canopy from the back to the front of the building; Option 2 would add windows and individual shutters with separate awnings over each window. Yana said the applicants were comfortable with either option and had provided both for review.

Commissioners discussed practical constraints, including two electrical poles that limit awning depth where the canopy would run. The commission expressed a preference for Option 1 — a continuous awning that would create a cohesive look and provide better cover along the side street. The applicant will return to the commission later with final color selections once they determine whether paint can be removed from the brick; commissioners agreed that lighting fixtures discussed (identified in the meeting as Bevelo-style lanterns) would be appropriate.

A motion to approve the application was made by Jared Donahoe and seconded by Dr. Owens; the motion passed by voice vote. The commission did not set an installation timeline and said the applicants should return for color approval after confirming the feasibility of paint removal from the brick surface.
