Historic commission approves top-of-building repaint for Rolling Hills, asks for yard sign resubmission

The Natchitoches Historic District Commission on an unspecified date approved a color option for a painted sign on the Kelly Webber Building for Rolling Hills Ministry and asked the applicant to submit final mock-ups for a proposed yard sign by email for administrative approval.

Commissioners discussed multiple color and placement options for the top-of-building painted sign and a smaller sign under the awning. Commissioners noted a 30-square-foot frontage limit in the local regulations and agreed the proposed top sign falls within that limit. Members suggested alternatives — including keeping the smaller sign under the awning and adding a two-sided sign in the adjacent landscaped bed to direct parking — and encouraged the applicant to submit a final mock-up showing materials and dimensions.

Representatives for Rolling Hills indicated they preferred the gray background with blue lettering option included in the application packet. The commission’s motion approved that color option (referred to in the packet as Exhibit 2) for the painting across the top of the building and required the applicants to submit exact sign dimensions, color chips and a yard-sign design to the planning office for final staff approval by email.

Action taken was procedural: commissioners approved the top painted sign color and authorized staff to review and approve the yard/landscape sign once the applicant submits the detailed mock-up and materials. The commission noted the applicant may keep an existing small sign under the awning if it complies with size rules and suggested a two-sided landscaped sign as a durable alternative to multiple individual signs.

The approval included direction to deliver design files to staff (Ms. Rock was identified as the staff contact) so final administrative approval could be completed before the next monthly meeting.
