Owner receives approval to repair overgrown greenhouse and rebuild porch at 115 Demozir Street

Justin Norman, a Natchitoches resident and owner of 115 Demozir Street, apologized to the community for allowing the property to deteriorate and presented a repair plan to the Natchitoches Historic District Commission. Commissioners approved the application.
Norman described extensive overgrowth, two trees growing into the house, and damage to the front landing and stairs caused by termites. He said the 10-year-old roof appears intact but that the front porch landing and stair structure will be demolished and replaced in-kind, with a preference to restore 6-by-6 posts where historically appropriate. "We are going to remove the trees and vines... We are going to remove the trees and vines that are over, basically the overgrowth," Norman said, and added they had placed caution tape and a keep-out sign around the unsafe front stairs.
He told the commission he may restore original clapboard where modern vinyl cannot be matched and that some vinyl soffits may be removed rather than replaced. Norman said he already has a quote from an approved contractor to rebuild the porch. Commissioner Donahoe moved to approve the application; Commissioner Robinson seconded and the motion passed on a voice vote.
The approval authorizes the owner to proceed with the repairs as presented, subject to standard permitting and inspections.
