Police launch Marshfield PEACE youth program with fishing event June 20

Marshfield Police Chief Jody Gurnk introduced a new community engagement program, Marshfield PEACE (Police Education and Community Engagement), at the June 10 council meeting and said the police department will launch a youth fishing event on June 20 at Hammis Park.
“PEACE is an acronym, stands for police education and community engagement,” Chief Gurnk said. He credited Community and Court Officer Derek Iverson with developing the program and said the department limited the inaugural fishing event to 30 participants; he reported 30 kids were already signed up.
Gurnk said an anonymous donation allowed the department to purchase T-shirts for participants, and Parks and Recreation will assist by providing lifeguards; the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will bring additional fishing poles for children who do not have them. The event will include basic instruction such as knot-tying and distribution of tackle boxes, the chief said.
Gurnk said the department hopes the PEACE brand can support other events and foster relationships between officers and youth. The council thanked the department for the program; no formal council action was required.
