Council opts to request two additional 1-stop early-voting sites for last week of early voting

Greenville City Council voted 6–0 to request two additional one-stop early-voting sites from the Pitt County Board of Elections. County staff estimated base costs and per-site costs and indicated additional sites would operate only the last week of early voting (Oct. 27–Nov. 1).
The Greenville City Council voted June 9 to request two additional one-stop early-voting sites from the Pitt County Board of Elections; the motion passed 6–0.
City staff explained the municipal agreement with the county requires two primary one-stop early-voting sites be provided for the entire early-voting period, and that the council may request additional sites subject to county approval. The county provided an estimated base cost of about $120,000 for the two mandated sites and an estimated cost for each additional site of about $11.05 (as provided in the county estimate). The county also advised that any additional sites requested by the city would be open only for the last week of early voting, Oct. 27–Nov. 1.
City staff noted the two county-provided base sites would be at the agricultural center and the County Community Schools building on County Home Road. Councilmember Blackburn moved to request two additional sites (in addition to the two base sites); Mayor Pro Tem Daniels seconded the motion. Councilmembers said increased access to early voting was a priority despite the additional cost, and the motion passed unanimously.
Staff emphasized that the county Board of Elections must approve requested additional locations; the city may request sites but the county will decide final approvals and site placement.
