Downtown mural and wayfinding projects advance; one mural to be relocated from textured historic wall

The TIRZ board heard that a recent downtown mural was well received, city staff will seek a different site for a mural planned for a historic textured building, and wayfinding mock-ups (six monument signs) are ready for final review before production.
Board members on June 10 praised a completed downtown mural and reviewed next steps for two other mural projects and a set of wayfinding signs.
"The mural has been a great success," the presiding officer said, noting favorable press coverage focused on the artist. Staff said one mural originally approved for a historic building will likely be moved because the building surface has texture that alters the installation method. "The city is going to probably find another spot for that one because it has texture involved in that mural," staff said.
Staff said the artist for a second mural has worked with the city before and that required documents are in place, which should speed the process. For the mural on Iturbide and San Bernardo, staff requested a final rendering so the board can see how the artwork will appear from the front and at full height.
On wayfinding signage, staff displayed final mock-ups for six monument-style signs and asked the board for any last edits. Changes incorporated included adding "Hotel" to La Posada and changing "El Metro facility" to "El Metro transit center." Copies of the actual-size mock-up were available and staff said all six are printed and the city expects to issue a notice to proceed for monument signage production soon.
Separately, the Git Street monument sign vendor submitted revised shop drawings; city engineering requested a traffic plan and staff expect to issue a notice to proceed within about a week.
