During the public‑comment portion of the meeting, speakers raised two community concerns: how the county designates its official newspaper for legal notices and maintenance at Golden West Memorial Cemetery.
A resident asked that the county’s process for vendor selection and awarding legal advertising be placed on a future agenda, saying the county needs a formal vendor package and asking the county attorney and administrator to research the current practice. The resident said he would not support the Port Gibson newspaper based on past concerns and requested clarity about how legal advertising is awarded.
Trish Barnes, editor of the Southern Reveille (a new local paper), said her paper is publishing legal notices as interim public information and expressed interest in being designated as the county’s paper of record. Barnes said state statute governs designation for legal notices and noted some rules, including a publication time requirement for formal designation, but that exceptions exist and a formal application process is available.
Alexander Martin of the Claiborne County Preservation Commission requested that county staff pick up a pile of debris at Golden West Memorial Cemetery off Rodney Road, describing the cemetery as neglected for decades and urging regular upkeep and possible use of summer workers to help maintain the site. County staff and the road manager were asked to follow up and the road manager acknowledged receipt of the request.
