Provo school district reports summer maintenance projects, appoints new Wasatch principal

The Provo City School Board heard updates on summer maintenance projects and administrative staffing during the business-administrator and superintendent reports.
Business Administrator Gavin Daley said multiple schools — including Spring Creek, Westridge, Canyon Crest and others — are receiving playground upgrades this summer. Daley said the district is replacing equipment and installing pour-in-play surfacing to improve safety. “We’re just replacing the equipment and putting the pour in play in in the surface so it’s safer for our students,” he said.
Daley told the board the maintenance projects were on schedule and that the maintenance department has a busy summer of work ahead preparing facilities for the new school year.
Superintendent Wendy Dow announced an administrative change: Wasatch Elementary Principal Ruth Ann Snow has decided to “stay at home with her grandkids” and the district has appointed Des Olsen, currently assistant principal at Edgemont Elementary, to be principal at Wasatch. Dow said the district is working through logistics and that an update will be provided at the next board meeting because Edgemont now has an opening for an assistant principal.
Dow and the administration also described recent leadership work: the district held a leadership conference and building leadership team trainings focused on creating collaborative school cultures, aligning school improvement plans and engaging teachers in implementation of the strategic plan. Dow credited staff including Daryl, Jason, Jared, Doug Finch, Judy and others for organizing the training and said the goal is to create ownership and feedback loops that support instruction.
No formal board action was required for these informational items. The board thanked maintenance and leadership teams for the summer work and the professional development efforts.
