Lee County update: state review of NTIA BEAD restructuring slows clarity on broadband funding; multiple ISPs remain interested

County staff said the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s restructuring of BEAD policy has left the state reviewing how federal changes will affect local projects; at least eight ISPs have expressed interest in bringing high-speed service to Lee County, but project funding and scale remain uncertain.
Jeremy (county board) told the County Services Committee that federal-level changes to broadband funding policy have required the state to reassess how BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) funds will be distributed and how that will affect local projects.
“The National Telecommunications and Information Administration did issue, a restructure, their policy. And... the state is looking at that and seeing how that's going to change the local funding projects,” Jeremy said. He told the committee the county has seen interest from multiple providers: “We've had at least 8 different Internet service providers that were interested in working within Lee County, and to procure that funding and to bring high... speed Internet access to individuals that currently do not have that.”
Jeremy said the county continues to coordinate with the state and interested Internet service providers to understand the implications of federal policy changes and to pursue opportunities where possible. He also noted that many of the fiber and trenching permits being filed locally are not directly tied to BEAD funding but still increase county broadband capacity.
No formal decisions were made; Jeremy said the county is monitoring state guidance and will share updates as details on funding and program waves become clearer.
