Council hears North well test results; council moves to secure BLM lease and continue exploration planning

Cedar City staff reported test results for a BLM North test well at the June 11 council meeting and the council agreed to pursue a permanent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lease for the site while further development and funding questions remain.
Staff said the test showed a productive volcanic zone in the upper section of the well and that initial water quality testing produced low total dissolved solids (TDS) but elevated turbidity, iron and aluminum. City staff said those parameters exceeded primary EPA standards on the initial test and that further well development, screening and cleaning could improve results. Staff also said the well was capped after the preliminary test because city funds were not immediately available to finish it.
Council discussed options including soliciting bids to finish the well and connecting it via pipeline; staff said a permanent lease from the BLM would prevent another party from leasing the same parcel and would be affordable (council cited a low annual lease cost). Staff and council agreed to pursue the BLM lease and continue planning for pipeline and finishing costs; no final decision was made to immediately fund well completion. The council also discussed related south-well drilling, depth targets and preliminary cost figures.
