The Metropolitan King County Council on May 20 proclaimed May 2025 as Bike Everywhere Month and invited Cascade Bicycle Club representatives to speak on the benefits of cycling and the need for bike infrastructure investments across King County.
Councilmember Balducci presented the proclamation and described bicycling as an economical, healthy and environmentally sound form of transportation. The proclamation references King County’s 2024 comprehensive plan and Metro’s long-range Metro Connects plan as supporting goals for multimodal mobility and bicycle facilities.
Vicky Clark, deputy director of Cascade Bicycle Club, and Rachel Schaffer of Cascade appeared at the dais. Clark highlighted three “joys” of cycling, noting that the Fremont Bridge set an all-time record with 95,000 bike trips last month—about 17% above pre‑COVID levels—and that Cascade teaches bike education to youth in partnership with schools. She also said Cascade volunteers have rescued and delivered 1,500,000 pounds of food to food-insecure households since 2020.
Councilmembers framed the month as an opportunity to promote safe options for people who choose or need to travel without a car and to advocate for investments that make bicycling safe and practical across King County. The council read the proclamation into the record and invited Cascade staff and councilmembers for a group photo.
The proclamation notes the growing popularity of electric bicycles and references Washington State’s standing in bicycle-friendly rankings by the League of American Bicyclists. Councilmembers said they see Bike Everywhere Month as a chance to boost public awareness and support for infrastructure that would enable more people of all ages and abilities to ride.
