Jeff Pagel, a Sunnyside resident, told the City Council during public comment on June 9 that gunfire occurred within about 100 feet of his home and asked the council to take emergency action against a local bar he said has been a repeated source of noise, fighting and open drug activity.
"This past weekend, there was a shooting not far — less than 100 feet from my front door," Pagel said. He told the council that emergency responders later recovered 23 shell casings on his street and that a large-caliber round remains lodged at his front door. Pagel said he measured sound from the bar at over 80 decibels at a distance of 100 feet and that prior noise citations and resident complaints have not resolved the problem.
Pagel formally requested that the council suspend the liquor license for the bar identified in his remarks until alleged violations are investigated and remediated. "We are counting on you to act soon," he said.
Council leadership acknowledged the comment and said staff were taking notes and would follow up; no formal council action on the liquor license was recorded during the meeting. The council's consent to refer public comment matters to staff for review was restated during the session.
The council's agenda later included law-enforcement and public-safety items; council members said they were taking note of community safety concerns raised during public comment.
