La Porte ISD administrators gave trustees an overview of preliminary student assessment results and district plans to refine scoring and support classroom behavior at Tuesday's meeting.
Assistant superintendent Julie (surname not specified in the record) told trustees the district is seeing gains in some high-school end-of-course (EOC) exams, notably Algebra I and biology. She said the EOC results include retesters and that algebra showed a substantial increase in the "masters" performance category. The district will release public 3'8 scores on June 16, she said.
District staff described a targeted rescoring strategy for writing essays: administrators reviewed essays and selected a small group of students for rescore requests under strict criteria (for example, odd scores or cases where rescoring could materially raise a student's result). Staff said each rescore request costs $50 if the score does not change and that the district submitted 11 students for rescoring at the high-school level; a separate window for 3'8 rescoring is scheduled in mid-June.
On behavior, the district previewed a Positive Classroom Playbook centered on six principles: classroom structure, clearly taught expectations and rules, student engagement strategies, acknowledgement of appropriate behavior, consistent responses to inappropriate behavior, and building trusting relationships. Administrators said the district will provide classroom support aides on each campus to assist with supervision, transitions and relationship-building, and will expand administrator coaching on unified disciplinary responses.
Trustees praised visible improvements in student behavior at recent events and suggested prioritizing relationship-building elements early in teacher training. Administrators said they will continue professional learning over the summer, prepare implementation materials for the fall and use new Skyward modules to track behavior data in real time.
Staff committed to presenting more-detailed, campus-level tutoring and staff-development spending figures to the board as a follow-up to the budget discussion.
