Council awards $132,844 contract for water treatment plant intake assessment

The Anacortes City Council approved a contract June 9 with HDR Engineering not to exceed $132,844 to perform a condition assessment of the water treatment plant’s intake pump station.
Terry Nemeth, the city’s water system manager, told council the intake structure dates to the early 1970s and while pumps were replaced in 2013–2019, the underlying structure has not been assessed for deficiencies. Nemeth said the intake station is “basically the lifeblood of the water treatment plant” and the assessment will document any structural or system failures and recommend repairs or redundancy.
Councilmember Walters emphasized concern about single points of failure despite recent redundancy investments such as a raw water pipeline; staff said the assessment will identify any failures and provide recommendations. Council approved the HDR contract by voice vote; the motion was made by Councilmember Bolton and seconded by Councilmember Young.
The study is intended to inform capital planning and to prioritize work to reduce operational risk at the treatment plant. No schedule for construction or repairs was adopted at the meeting.
