Residents and tennis players urged the council Tuesday to pursue repairs and possible expansion of the high-school tennis courts, saying improved facilities would encourage community play and school use.
Debbie Wittenmeyer, a longtime resident and former preschool teacher, told council that a recent community event using a soft “red ball” drew new players and that the existing courts are locked outside business hours and sometimes not kept up. She asked the city to consider improvements that could encourage more exercise and youth participation.
A council member said the city is obtaining quotes and has had conversations with school officials and with city staff (Morton was named in discussion) about adding another court; the council noted that having six courts could allow the school to host tournaments. Council also observed that the Jefferson South TIF district overlaps the area discussed and that the council is aware of the courts’ condition.
No funding commitment was made at the meeting. Council members encouraged residents to continue fundraising and flagged that the schools and city would coordinate on cost and scheduling.
