Board approves temporary fireworks stand on New Salem Highway

Rutherford County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a temporary special-exception permit allowing a 40-by-60-foot fireworks tent to operate on a commercial-services-zoned property along New Salem Highway.
Staff told the board the applicant, Jake Lloyd, had operated from a nearby site over the last two years with no reported issues and that the location meets the standards for a temporary special exception with recommended conditions. The hours presented to the board were 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, June 20 through July 5; the applicant also sought permission to remain open until midnight on a July date that was not specified in the staff presentation.
During a brief public hearing, Lloyd said the location had worked well in past years and he did not anticipate problems. Staff showed site photos and noted the tent would be set 40 feet off the property line and that circulation and on-site parking avoid backing directly onto the highway. No callers to the office registered opposition.
A motion to approve the request passed on a recorded roll call with all voting members voting yes. The board approved the permit with the staff-recommended conditions described in the staff report.
