The Vigo County Planning Commission approved a rezoning request for 8567 Wabash Avenue to C-3 regional commercial to allow continued operation and expansion of Twiggy's Restaurant, the applicant said at the meeting.
Mr. Felling, representing Twiggy's Restaurant, told commissioners the business has been “a staple on the East Side for 20 plus years” and that the owners recently added outdoor seating. Planning staff described the area as primarily suburban residential with mixed uses nearby, including regional commercial zoning to the east and a residential mobile home park to the south.
Staff said the property is currently zoned RS for single-family residential and that rezoning to C-3 would allow the business to expand without repeated rezoning requests. The staff report noted the Area Planning Commission forwarded a favorable recommendation and that there were no remonstrators present at the hearing. Planning staff also said a variance for the front-yard setback will need approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals.
A commissioner moved to approve the rezoning; commissioners voted in favor. The transcript records the vote as multiple “Aye” responses and no opposition. Mr. Felling said the applicant expects to seek the setback variance and that the variance hearing was scheduled soon after the planning meeting. The transcript does not specify conditions attached to the rezoning beyond the need to secure any necessary variances and building permits.
