Council hears requests to upgrade 4D courtroom before July 1 and to rent 20 parking spaces for Community Corrections

County facilities staff briefed the Vigo County Council on short‑term facility work to prepare court spaces and on temporary parking for Community Corrections clients.

A facilities representative told the council that upgrades to the 4D courtroom are necessary to make space for a new magistrate and estimated the work at approximately $22,000. The work would include walls, relocation of lighting and ductwork and needs to be completed by July 1, the speaker said. Facilities asked the council to allow the county maintenance department to perform the work now, with a request for reimbursement to the council in August.

On parking, staff reported there is no parking at the Community Corrections building and described a short‑term agreement to rent 20 spaces from the owner of a nearby property at a cost of $1,500 per month. Council members asked whether the rental would be under a contract and whether the county could terminate if spaces went unused; staff said a contract would be negotiated and that they expect those spaces to be used, but details remain to be finalized.

Facilities also updated the council on the old jail north of the courthouse, where work has been delayed by weather and utility relocations; the project remains under budget, the speaker said. Courthouse camera installation is nearly complete but outdoor camera hookups must await dry conditions to bore fiber and run power.

Councilors asked several logistical questions; no additional appropriations were immediately requested at the meeting for these items, although staff said they will seek reimbursement and would return with contract details.
