Summer camps nearly full, field trips funded; Tommy Boy Fest set for Aug. 7–9 in Sandusky

Sandusky Parks & Recreation staff reported that summer youth programs are running at high capacity and outlined a series of field trips funded in part by a grant, while also previewing a three-day event tied to the film "Tommy Boy" planned for August.
"We had summer break camp day 3 today. We started we opened, doors opened Monday. We've had, 88 kiddos 2 days, Monday and Tuesday," a parks staff member said, summarizing early enrollment for summer camp sessions.
Staff said one Foxborough location saw smaller attendance early in the week due to rain but that sessions were picking up, and that staff provide lunches by picking them up from Sandusky City Schools and delivering them to neighborhood sites.
Field trips are scheduled on Fridays between July 27 and Aug. 1 and will include visits to the Maritime Museum, Back to the Wild, the Erie Metro Parks Nature Center, and Maple Crest Horse Farm. Parks staff said they applied to the Erie County Community Foundation to cover field-trip costs.
Parks staff also previewed a community movie night and a three-day "Tommy Boy Fest" set for Aug. 7–9. "It's a 3 day event where we're gonna have... the director actually from the movie is bringing a vehicle, the classic 1967 Plymouth Belvedere ... We're still putting some things together," the staff member said. Staff said the festival is a collaboration with the Greater Sandusky Partnership and Shores & Islands and that city programming funds will support some programming, similar to the Eclipse event.

Next steps: staff encouraged registration where spaces remain and said they will publish pool and program schedules on the Sandusky City Schools and Erie County Health Department websites. The parks department also expects sponsors and collaborators to finalize programming leading into August's festival.
