Council approves memorandum of understanding with Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Superior Common Council approved a memorandum of understanding Aug. 17, 2010, to partner with the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) to support research, education, outreach and stewardship activities.
Park and Recreation Administrator Gary Morgan described the reserve’s mission and said the program’s goals include educating students, teachers, community leaders and the general public. Councilors asked whether the reserve would carry out concrete educational activities; Morgan and supporters said planning was underway and that education was a central element of the NERR’s stated mission.
Councilor Henry said he hoped the reserve would develop visible education efforts such as signage or a facility and called the program “great” for the area. Morgan said the NERR’s objectives include multiple education and outreach items and that more concrete plans would emerge as the reserve implements its program.
The council approved the MOU by voice vote.
