Council refers persistent train-horn complaints back to Public Works committee

The Superior Common Council voted Aug. 17, 2010, to refer renewed complaints about prolonged train horns back to the Public Works Committee for additional investigation and information gathering.
Councilor Olsen and others described households reporting instances in which train horns sounded continuously for more than five minutes; the Public Works Committee had previously received complaints and “received and filed” the matter. Councilor Olsen requested the item be returned to committee with updated information so staff and the committee could follow up with the police and rail operators.
During discussion, councilors said prior efforts had produced intermittent data collection, including placement of a speed cart, and that additional information had been slow to arrive. A motion to refer the matter back to the Public Works Committee was seconded and approved.
The committee will revisit the complaints and consider whether additional measures, data collection or coordination with rail operators and police are warranted.
