Superior approves $173,700 purchase of articulated wheel loader

The Superior Common Council on Nov. 3 approved awarding a bid to Nortrax Equipment of Ashland to purchase one large articulated wheel loader for $173,700.
Assistant Public Works Director Goetzmann recommended awarding the bid and described how the city determines replacement timing. He said the fleet routinely rebuilds engines and weighs repair costs versus operational downtime. "No. They're at their they're at their end of their useful operational life for us, to be to use them on a regular daily basis," Goetzmann said, explaining that some smaller operators may buy traded units but the city needs reliable daily operation.
Councilor Finland moved to approve the purchase; Councilor Dalbec seconded the motion. Council members asked about engine rebuilds and trade-in value; Goetzmann said the fleet manager and mechanics provide input on hours and repair estimates, and that machines in this class often are rebuilt twice in a 12–13 year service life. The council approved Item 7.2 by voice vote.
The staff report identified the outgoing machine as a 1998 John Deere model and said the purchase is intended to maintain daily operations rather than accept a machine that would require frequent, costly repairs.
