Board adopts updated student and parent rights-and-responsibilities handbook

The West Allis‑West Milwaukee School District board on June 9 approved the 2025–26 rights‑and‑responsibilities handbook for students and parents with a series of mostly formatting and wording updates.
District staff described the changes as minor: a new cover page and updated table of contents, refreshed leadership photos, hyperlinks moved from Google Docs to the district website, an updated immunization table and a revised section label changing “English language learners” to “multilingual learners.” The handbook also adds the District’s strategic‑plan link and renames a leadership title to “Teaching and Learning,” among other edits.
At the meeting board member Jane Becker requested a wording change on page 44. Becker said the term “homeless” is stigmatizing and suggested replacing it with “those experiencing homelessness.” District staff said they would check the language against federal law and funding guidance, noting that the McKinney‑Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides specific definitions and protections and that some federal notices use particular statutory terms. “We’ll follow up with that and make sure we align with McKinney‑Vento,” said a district representative.
Trustees approved the handbook by motion and second; no members requested items be removed from the consent packet for further consideration.
