Tippecanoe County Council on June 10 approved an additional appropriation of $426,000 to cover the county’s costs for housing juveniles charged as adults after a change in state law.
Magistrate Sarah Wyatt told the council that under a change in Indiana law, juveniles charged as adults can no longer be held in the county jail and must be placed in juvenile detention centers outside Tippecanoe County. "We don't have one here in Tippecanoe County, so we have to send them to out of county facilities," Wyatt said, adding that placements vary widely in cost and location.
